MARCH 2022 UPDATE

The Barwon Heads Chorale  commenced rehearsals on Tuesday March 1st program with new Director – Terry Norman and the over 20 people who have joined again are busy rehearsing for Easter Sunday , ANZAC Day and a possible concert later in the year

The Barwon Heads Chorale is back!

After a two year Covid Vacation, the Chorale is back with a new Director Terry Norman. We are so fortunate to have such an experienced musician leader in Terry. Commencing on the 1st March, 2022 he will be generating a new program with some old and new songs.

We still need to be mindful of the Virus, appreciating that singing is a very easy way of spreading Covid. We need to be triple vaxxed for maximum protection, and masks are preferred in the Church while singing. If we do get exposed to the virus it should only be a “covid cold”. Remember that we didn’t change our activities during recent flu outbreaks.

If you would like some more information on the Barwon Heads Chorale, please call Jo. You can find her number by CLICKING HERE. Otherwise, feel free to join  us at a rehearsal one Tuesday night from 7.15 at the Anglican Church Barwon Heads  if you fancy a sing and a laugh – everyone is welcome, the more the merrier!

The enjoyment of singing in harmony with others has demonstrated therapeutic effects, and additionally the social aspect of each week’s rehearsal sometimes leaves your sides aching from laughter!  Much fun is had, along with learning terrific music.

The Chorale draws members from all over the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and the greater Geelong area, with some members travelling from Melbourne and Ballarat to attend rehearsals.  There are no audition requirements, the only thing you need to bring along with you is your voice and a healthy sense of humour!

A little about our new Chorale Director Terry Norman…

Terry Norman holds a Master of Music in performance, a Doctor of Philosophy in musicology, and a Diploma of Education.

He studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, studying organ with the late Anton Heiller, (at the time widely regarded as the finest organist in the world), choral conducting with Hans Gillesberger (who was at the time head conductor of the Vienna Boys’ Choir), and improvisation with Peter Planyavsky. He subsequently completed the English Special Course in Music and Music Education at the Orff Institute in Salzburg.

Terry has held church positions throughout Australia and in Somerset England. He has given organ and harpsichord recitals, both solo and in concertos and ensembles.

Apart from his work in churches, he has also conducted secular and school choirs. In Armidale he founded the Chamber Choir Fiori Musicale and the New England Children’s Choir. He was also the founder and director of The New England Bach Festival. In Ballarat he founded Musica da Chiesa, an adult Chamber Choir.

In December, 2003 Terry was awarded a special New England Music Award by the New England Conservatorium of music, and in January 2004 was awarded the City of Armidale Australia Day Award for an individual. Terry worked in the UK for two years and, on returning to Australia in 2005, retrained as a counsellor.

In 2017, in Canberra, he founded “Jam for Refugees” an annual ten hour concert which aims to raise awareness and funds for the plight of refugees in Australia. Now resident in Geelong, Terry plans to extend “Jam for Refugees” to Geelong and Melbourne.

We are indeed fortunate to have such an experienced musician as our Director.
