Entering the tranquil environs of the Thirteenth Beach Golf Club on a cold Sunday in July begins to set the mood. Walk into the beautiful clubhouse and the mood is all around you. You are welcomed by a buzz of voices as people get re-acquainted and look out onto the glorious views of one of Victoria’s finest golf courses. This was the setting for our third (or perhaps fourth?) Jazz in July, and quite possibly it was the best.
Music was provided by Sandra Talty’s quartet. They provided a fine mixture of traditional and swing jazz. Vocals by Sandra and Michael McQuaid were smooth and expressive, and the balance of reeds, guitar, bass and drums was much enjoyed. The band played two generous sets over the course of the afternoon, and the crowd showed their warm appreciation. There was a small but heavily used dancing space in one corner.
The catering team at Thirteenth had set up the room elegantly, and all of the capacity crowd of 120 were able to see and hear very well, while enjoying the stunning view. There were many favourable comments on the meal for its variety and quality, and the table service was unobtrusive and efficient.
The success of this event assures that it will return in future years. Sadly, it may be without the talents of Michael McQuaid, who is off on an extended musical adventure in London. We wish this fine musician every success on his travels.
Events like this do not just happen. The whole BHFMS Committee pitched in, and in particular Natale Lewington orchestrated and made everything come neatly together.
Our next monthly concert is on Sunday August 13 at 2.30pm at All Saints Church, and will feature baritone Ian Cousins and pianist Katherine Capewell. Then on September 3, the Barwon Heads Chorale will present a concert in the BH Hall, where the highlight will be a wonderful medley from “Les Miserables”. AND you are all advised to “save the date” for a very special event on Saturday February 24th. All I can say about this event at this stage is that it will again be at Thirteenth Beach, outdoors under the stars, and will feature a nationally and internationally known performer. WATCH THIS SPACE!
I was asked yesterday why one would join the BHFMS. The annual fee for a couple is $40. If you attended all 11 monthly concerts, you would benefit financially by around $70. Even attending half the concerts would make you a saving of at least $15. And you would be helping to keep an important village organisation in a position to offer events such as this one! You can get information about joining on our Website, or by attending any concert.
This is the 4th time the Barwon Heads Fine Music Society has presented this popular event. Here is your chance to break out from the gloom of winter with some wonderful music and fabulous food!
The venue is the lovely Thirteenth Beach Golf Club in Barwon Heads.
You will enjoy a two course lunch and a glass of wine, while being entertained by the Sandra Talty Fabulous Swing Quartet. Seating is around the dance floor, enjoying vistas across the fairways of Thirteenth Beach. Further drinks will be available at bar prices.
$65 for BHFMS members and $70 for non-members. Bookings are essential at www.trybooking.com/PRYZ
