Our Vision

Music in itself provides a wonderful opportunity to meet with others and appreciate the beauty and variety of the presentation, whilst contributing positive health benefits. These include developing new friendships, addressing health issues, building communities, encouraging inclusivity and addressing the issue of social isolation.

The aim of the Barwon Heads Fine Music Society Inc. is to encourage social connection and good community networks through the performance of music of all genres.

Beginnings

The Barwon Heads Fine Music Society Inc. is a not for profit organisation established since 2004, with the aim of bringing new and exciting music of all genres to the community of Barwon Heads. It all began with Sunday concerts in the Anglican church, then a weekend Carnival of Music and now the addition of the Barwon Heads Chorale.

The Barwon Heads Fine Music Society Inc. caters for all groups of people – those who like to listen to classical, jazz, modern, those who like to sing, and those who just love music.

Jenny-Wallace_Smith_WEBVarious artists ranging from jazz, trios, quartets, piano recitals and singing groups perform each month and at major events. President Jenny Wallace –Smith, and her hard-working committee arrange and source interesting talented people to present an excellent range of music for the people of Barwon Heads and visitors to our seaside village.

The Carnival of Music

In 2009 the BHFMS took on a huge task of an Inaugural Carnival of Music in a wonderful weekend of eight concerts.

Laurance_WEBLaurance Hodgkinson was the person with the vision for a  Carnival of Music  and worked constantly with a willing band of volunteers  to bring an amazing program of music for a weekend.

The Carnival of Music has continued in 2010, 2011 and in 2012, when sadly Laurance Hodgkinson retired from his position as Secretary and the great visionary of the Carnival of Music

The four Carnival of Music weekends have been a great success, and was supported through the sale of tickets, the support of Councillor Andy Richards, through the CoGG Arts and Festivals Councillor Grants and support from various sponsors and generous donations from the people of Barwon Heads.

The Barwon Heads Fine Music Society Chorale

In late 2009, the Barwon Heads Fine Music Chorale was established.

nataleWe were very fortunate to have Natale Lewington, an opera singer who had moved to Barwon Heads, who is the Chorale Musical Director accompanied by Hazel  Mitchell. The Barwon Heads Chorale rehearse every Tuesday evening in the Anglican Church, and have performed concert fundraisers for St John of God special care nursery, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Cottage by the Sea and have participated in the Barwon Heads Christmas Carols.
